The buying power for a pattern day trader is four times the excess of the maintenance margin as of the closing of business of the previous day (say an account has $35,000 after the previous day's trade, then the excess here is $10,000 as this amount is over and above the minimum requirement of $25,000. Until the margin call is met, your day-trading account will be restricted to day-trading buying power of only two times maintenance margin excess based on your daily total trading commitment. If the day-trading margin call is not met by the fifth business day, the account will be further restricted to trading only on a cash available basis for 90 days or until the call is met. If you have less than 25k then you can do 3 roundtrip trades (open and close a transaction in the same day) in a 5 day rolling business day period.
